Pop quiz! Don’t worry, we just have one question for you:

The competitive video gaming industry, commonly known as esports, offers career options in which of the following fields?

  • Data Analytics
  • Communication
  • Event Management
  • Sales
  • Higher Education
  • Community Engagement

The answer, believe it or not, is all of the above. Esports is a $1 billion industry that presents a variety of compelling career paths. Let’s explore just a few of them.

Working with Athletes

You don’t have to be a professional gamer to work in esports, but if you like the team atmosphere and want to work directly with players, there are plenty of roles to choose from. For example:

  • Coach
  • Team Analyst
  • Fitness Trainer
  • Agent
  • Recruiter
  • Referee
  • Collegiate Esports Director

Communication and Marketing

The rapid growth of esports has created a wealth of opportunity for communication and marketing professionals. Positions in this field include:

  • Shoutcaster (color or play-by-play)
  • Tournament Host
  • Brand Marketer
  • Digital Marketing Specialist
  • Data Analyst
  • Journalist
  • Content Creator
  • Video Producer
  • PR Professional

Event Management and Fan Engagement

Like other sporting events, esports tournaments attract thousands of fans to watch the competition and cheer for their favorite athletes — and millions more watch online. These large events would not be possible without a large team of professionals who focus on:

  • Event Planning
  • Project Management
  • Tournament Operations
  • Tournament Promotion
  • Community Relations
  • Fan Engagement
  • Social Media
  • Sales and Partnerships

This is by no means a complete list of possible careers, as esports also employs professionals in business, accounting and finance, IT, merchandising, and more.
