Turning an AA or AS into a BA in Liberal Studies at UNCG

Are you enrolled in an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree at a North Carolina community college? If so and you’re thinking about continuing onto the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (BLS) at UNCG, completion of your A.A. or A.S. through the North Carolina community college system can make that process much smoother.

How?

There’s an agreement in place between North Carolina community colleges and University of North Carolina (UNC) system schools - of which UNCG is one - which determines how your A.A. or A.S is evaluated. We refer to it as the North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA). “Students who earn the A.A./A.S. degree from a North Carolina community college and earned grades of C or better will be eligible for 60 semester hours of credit, junior standing, and will have met General Education Core (GEC) requirements. Students who earn C- or D grades in the A.A./A.S. program may or may not be admitted as juniors, but will not have GEC waived.”

What does this mean for you?

General Education Core (GEC) courses such as literature, natural science, and history will be covered by your A.A. or A.S. degree. Transferring into UNCG, your focus within the BLS program will be the major requirements (30 BLS credits) plus any elective credits to help you reach the overall minimum number of hours required for graduation.

That covers everything?

Not quite. Foreign language proficiency is an overall degree requirement for the BLS program. Equivalent course levels at the NC community college are:

  • American Sign Language - ASL 212 - Intermediate American Sign Language II
  • Arabic - ARA 212- Intermediate Arabic II
  • Chinese - CHI 212 - Intermediate Chinese II
  • French - FRE 212 - Intermediate French II
  • German - GER 212 - Intermediate German II
  • Italian - ITA 212 - Intermediate Italian II
  • Japanese - JPN 212 - Intermediate Japanese II
  • Latin - LAT 212 - Intermediate Latin II
  • Portuguese - POR 212 - Intermediate Portuguese II
  • Russian - RUS 212 - Intermediate Russian II
  • Spanish - SPA 212 - Intermediate Spanish II

If you have not met this level,  you will have to meet foreign language proficiency as part of your UNCG coursework.

What if you don’t have an A.A. or A.S.?

Does this mean that only A.A. or A.S. degrees from North Carolina community colleges will transfer into the BLS program?  Not at all.  If you’re attending a North Carolina community college but are not looking to finish the A.A. or A.S., if you complete the General Education transfer core (44 semester hours), your GEC requirements will have been met.

If you’re transferring credit from other accredited 2 year or 4 year institutions, that coursework will be evaluated on a course by course basis. Our blog post on unofficial transcript evaluations may be helpful in understanding the transcript evaluation process.
